In Linux, there are just files, applications, and the terminal. I didn't realize all the options or how much time I spent navigating windows on my Mac. Unlike the Mac's desktop, there's not a lot to get lost in, which means there's less to distract me from my work or the applications I want to run. It's also easy to define your own custom hotkey shortcuts.īeyond this, there's not much else to say. To open the GNOME terminal, I type Ctrl+Alt+T or just Alt+Tab to switch between an open application and an open terminal. To access my file system, I click on the Files icon in the dash. I can access my applications through the application dash bar or a grid button to get to the application view. In fact, it's intuitive and the overview takes only a couple minutes to read. For one thing, it's minimal there's not much GUI to get caught up in. I tried several, but I have to say, I like the simplicity of running GNOME out of the box. At first, I thought I'd want to spend more time finding an alternate desktop environment or window manager that was more Mac-like, such as Enlightenment. I've been using the XPS 13 for three months and my dual-booted Linux work laptop for two years. So when there was a sale, I took the plunge and purchased it. While it's easy enough to get a PC, wipe it, and install a new Linux distro, I was attracted to the cohesive operating system and hardware, but one that allowed a lot of the customization we know and love in Linux. Most importantly, it came loaded with Ubuntu. I chose it because I love the feel of the Macbook (and especially the slim Macbook Air), and reviews of the XPS 13 suggested it seemed it was similar, with really positive reviews of the trackpad and keyboard. After doing some research, reading reviews and message boards, I went with the long-celebrated Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition 7390, opting for the 10th Generation i7. I began exploring the possibilities for a Macbook-like Linux laptop. For years, I used the Mac's terminal to access Darwin's Unix-like operating system, and I was spending more and more time bouncing between the terminal and my web browser. ![]() My primary machine was starting to show its age. Last fall, I started to notice my Air was running hot, and the fan was coming on more often. I considered making it my primary machine, but I loved the portability of my Macbook Air, and continued to use that as well. I used it for game development, 3D modeling, some machine learning, and basic programming in C# and Java. It was a larger laptop with an integrated GPU, and dual-booted Linux and Windows. Time to make the switch?Ībout two years ago, I began using a Dell for work. I began to consider what it would be like to try running a Linux distro as my daily driver, but I thought the Macbook's comfort and ease, especially the hardware's size and weight, would be hard to find in a non-Mac laptop. While none of them became my main machine, I started to really enjoy using Linux. I also collected a number of very old laptops rescued from the trash at universities, so, by necessity, I decided to try out various Linux distros. Later, I began using Raspberry Pi computers booting Raspbian. Free online course: RHEL Technical Overview.I thought I had the best of both worlds: the macOS graphical operating system and user interface alongside the ability to jump into a quick terminal session. I couldn't get all my Linux software to work, but much of it did. I used iTerm2 and the Homebrew package manager. Over time, I found myself working largely in the terminal. Most significantly, I am annoyed by Apple's closed ecosystem-the difficulty of accessing photos without iPhoto the necessity of using iTunes and the enforced bundling of the Apple store ecosystem even when I don't want to use it. Other changes annoyed me-not all at once, but slowly. Some changes have been for the better, such as better stabilization, simpler hardware choices, increased security, and more accessibility options. But as it evolved, it changed significantly. Flash-forward decades later, and Apple is a behemoth, a trillion-dollar company. I remember thinking the company could disappear one day. And even though there was a lot less software for Macintosh than PCs, I thought the Mac ecosystem was better, just on the strength of KidPix and Hypercard, which I still think of as the unsurpassed, most intuitive creative stack.Įven so, I still had the feeling that Mac was an underdog compared to Windows. It didn't start with a DOS command prompt it opened to a friendly desktop. Back in the mid-1990s, I was attracted to its ease of use. I had used Macintosh SE computers in school and learned to type with Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, so I've been a Mac user for well over 25 years. In 1994, my family bought a Macintosh Performa 475 as a home computer.

Icon fonts are ideal to work with when you want to change the link colors easily. In this tutorial, we're using FontAwesome icons. Using hover effects to change the icon and background color is a good way to indicate they are clickable. When designing icon links we need to make it obvious they are clickable. ![]() I’m sharing the conversation with you because in many published and pre-published work I read, I believe a deeper POV would strengthen the emotional punch of the story. I want to invite you into a conversation, one in which a CP (critique partner) and I discussed a problem he was having with his WIP. I posed the dream questions as a way to understand how he sees the characters, because POV was the heart of the problem (check out this post for a basic description of the different POVs you can use for your story). If you were taken aback by that last question, hang on to that feeling because I’m coming back to it. Over a two-inning span on Wednesday, the Mets made a pair of routine plays appear as arduous tasks. When you dream, how do you experience the dream world? Are you yourself? Do you see things from your own eyes or from the outside? What kinds of dreams stick with you after you wake up?ĭo you jump out of your head and into someone else’s, mid-dream? That figure has nearly doubled with four errors in the last two games against the Nationals. The Mets entered the series with six errors through their opening 23 games, making them the second-best fielding team in Major League Baseball. The lone damage for the Mets came in the bottom of the third when Eduardo Escobar knocked a line drive to right field that skipped past Lane Thomas for a triple and Marte knocked an RBI single. However as a professional, I've definitely got to do better." I personally feel like I have to do better, but it's part of the game. ![]() "They deserve credit, and I'm getting my pitches and I'm missing," said Lindor, who is 1-for-8 in the series. They moved into scoring position on a groundball, but fireballer Hunter Harvey got Starling Marte to wave through a high 2-2 fastball and Francisco Lindor to go fishing at an 0-2 splitter low and away. Pinch-hitters Brett Baty and Daniel Vogelbach drew back-to-back walks to flip over the lineup. The Mets had a tailormade opportunity to breakthrough in the bottom of the seventh by playing to their strength. That's why pitching's always at a premium." When the pitchers are on top of their game, I've said it 100 times, pitchers win that battle. "I know what our guys' track record says. "You go through periods where guys make mistakes that don't normally make them and you hurt them, then you go through periods where guys seem to be throwing every pitch in the right sequence where they want to see it," Showalter said. ![]() ![]() While they scored once on Wednesday, they had one fewer hit. In the series opener on Tuesday, the Mets were shut out as they only managed to collect five hits while striking out 13 times and walked once. Gray struck out nine batters on Tuesday and Gore followed him up by matching his career high with 10 strikeouts against the Mets through six innings on Wednesday night. With Josiah Gray and MacKenzie Gore hammering the strike zone in the opening two games, the Mets were at a disadvantage. I want to go deeper into the game and in order for me to do that, I need to start off hot." Absent offenseĮntering the series, the Mets were among the top five teams in fewest strikeouts, while walking the second-most times in MLB. "I do think I was able to handle the ball a little bit better toward the end, but I need to be able to do that right from the get-go, given the pitch count," Senga said through an interpreter. The Mets didn't do enough offensively to lift him up. Kodai Senga struggled to locate his forkball and needed 34 pitches to get through a two-run second inning, but he stranded six runners across five innings and struck out seven. Turn the page, focus on our families, come back tomorrow prepared and get ready to play a big-league game to try and win." "We have been a group that has been able to turn the page extremely quick, learn from today, turn the page pretty soon, as soon as we get to our families. "This is one of those stretches," Francisco Lindor said. |
